Veggie Truck Farmers Market

The Veggie Truck Farmers Market invites the people of the Harrisburg community and the whole of the Central Savannah River Area to kick off the 2014 season on Tuesday, March 25. The market, now in its second year, has relocated to the spacious grounds across from the Kroc Center, which is located at 1833 Broad St. The free event runs from 4:30 to 7 p.m. every Tuesday from March through October, rain or shine. The kickoff on March 25 features a cooking class, children’s activities, live music and, of course, locally-grown, farm-fresh produce, honey, eggs, baked goods, nuts and meats. The West End Market & Bakery, a new store in Harrisburg selling locally-grown foods and artisan handicrafts, will also celebrate its grand opening in partnership with the Veggie Truck team that day. “The weekly event is a traditional farmers market open to all shoppers, but our focus is on serving the Harrisburg community,” said Marsha Jones of Good Neighbor Ministries and St. Luke United Methodist Church. “This year we really want to engage the community, especially children, in more fun, hands-on, market-based activities each week.” Cash and credit are accepted. Plus, the Veggie Truck Farmers Market is the only area farmers market that doubles SNAP/EBT dollars.Local farmers participating this year include Adderson’s Fresh Produce of Keysville, J & L Farm and Stable of Hephzibah, Hexemaus Farm of Waynesboro, and the Backyard Garden of Augusta. Plan It Foods of Aiken also plans to come aboard later in the season to supply take-home meals created with local ingredients. “From eggs to honey to fruits and vegetables, the Veggie Truck provides access to locally-grown foods that just weren’t available in Harrisburg before,” said Brett Heimlich, founder of the Veggie Truck initiative and a medical student at Georgia Regents University. “With our ability to double SNAP/EBT dollars, we can make these healthful foods affordable as well as accessible.”
