More Precious Than Gold

While on vacation last week I found a treasure at an antique store. It was worn from years of use but I knew it was of value. It’s actually so valuable, some would consider it priceless!
It’s a vintage Bible printed in London in the early 1900’s. The binding is so ragged that the olive wood cover, made in Jerusalem, is no longer attached. Fragile, yellowed pages fell out the first time I opened it. On the inside cover is a note written in pencil, “To Mother. From Lassie Jo.” The more I looked through the book, the more I realized how much it was loved over the years. It was used so much that it was literally falling apart. I paid $25 but was curious if it was worth more because I had never seen a vintage Bible like it. After some research I learned it basically has no monetary value because there have been so many Bibles printed between 1820-2000. That’s from a world view though. What does God say about its value?
Everyone is looking for the best investments for their money and time. We want to know what investments are most valuable, which will retain their value and which will grow in value. The greatest investment you will ever make is spending time in His Word. Psalm 119:72 says: “The law from your mouth is more precious to me than thousands of pieces of silver and gold.” It’s not just knowing God’s word that is important though but also keeping it. Knowing God’s word comes first. You can’t keep what you don’t know. There’s great value growing in God’s wisdom. Over time it becomes a map for our lives and lights the way to eternal life with Jesus; a gift that is priceless.
What will your Bible look like at the end of your life? Have you dusted it off lately and read it? Make today the day you start wearing that book out! It’s the sign of a Christina life that’s treasured one of the most priceless gifts ever given, God’s Word. My prayer for you is that at the end of it, what will remain is an unshakable faith and a Bible worn that is falling apart just like the one I found the other day.
The law from your mouth is more precious to me than thousands of pieces of silver and gold. Psalm 119:72

My husband, Mark, went home to be with The Lord Almighty Good Friday, April 15, 2022. I buried him with his Bible laid on his chest with his hands crossed over it. It was the Bible our children and grandchildren gave to him for his birthday in 2000. What a great investment they gave him. He always carried his Bible to work and read scriptures from his Bible every day during his break until he retired in 2019. He still read his scriptures from his Bible every day until he couldn't due to his illness . He had "an unshakable faith" and a Bible that was showing wear and tear. He lived by the scripture Psalm 119 :72, but his favorite was Psalm 23, which he instilled in his children and grandchildren. He was very jovial and always found good in everyone he met.

I have one Bible saved for my son. Lots of notes
The newer Bible has mot been used as much and that's a shame. It should be opened. It should be written in. It should be loved. Thank you for the story that gives us a reminder what the Bible is. God's Word.
