Got Milk?

Posted on Jun 29, 2022 by April Sather

When I was a child growing up in Wisconsin, my grandparents had a dairy farm down the road from my home. I spent a lot of time with them and helped my grandma in the barn whenever I could. Often times my job was to feed the baby animals, which was a favorite for me.  As a hobby, my grandma also raised some sheep. If a lamb was born during a season when it was cold in the evenings, she would bring it in the house to bottle feed it and keep it warm. This would ensure the lamb wouldn’t suffer hypothermia and would be fed enough to sustain it. As a girl who loved playing with baby dolls, I’m fairly certain there was nothing better than holding a tiny lamb wrapped up in a blanket and feeding it a bottle. After a short time, it would grow enough in strength so that it could fend for itself and would no longer have to be brought indoors during the evenings.

1 Peter 2:2-3  says, “ Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.” For many of us, once we accepted Jesus as our Savior we just expected to know what is true. However, if we aren’t studying God’s Word and feeding spiritually on His truth, we’re vulnerable to living more by what we feel than what is true. We don’t mature in our faith and remain infants, becoming vulnerable to being led astray by the world. When we are new in our faith, we drink the knowledge of God’s Word like a baby drinking a bottle but over time we should be progressing and growing.

The Lord is our shepherd. His desire is to keep His sheep safe so we don't stray. One way to do that is to equipt us with the wisdom and truth of the Bible so we know how to live our lives. We have to read it though to soak it in our hearts. Is your Bible collecting dust or being used daily? The more time you spend with in it, the deeper your faith will become and you will grow in maturity.

Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good. 1 Peter 2:2-3
